WHY PHYSIOTHERAPY AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ARE HERE TO STAY

We can’t all do invasive surgery, even if we could all afford it. People just can’t take time off work because they need to keep earning money! It becomes riskier as we get older, too. Physiotherapy teaches you to solve your problems through rehabilitative exercises.

WHY HAS PHYSIOTHERAPY AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY TAKEN OFF?

It’s the natural way to improve your state of health without putting yourself into massive debt through medication or operations. Preventative medicine remains the single best way to avoid debilitating medical conditions, despite the advances society has made in the last 150 years. That’s why physiotherapy is here to stay. There are plenty of jobs to be had in this field, and more are on the way.

Canada has an aging population of retiring baby boomers who need preventative medicine. They need medical solutions for their painful conditions that don’t force them to compromise their life savings. Traditional medicine simply cannot keep up with this demand; doctors and nurses are both overworked and outnumbered by the sheer volume of patients that they need to see, which has put a gigantic strain on our medical system.

That’s why physiotherapists and occupational therapists are going to proliferate sooner rather than later. They need to be out there to help people avoid dire medical conditions before they have a chance to fester in our elders. You never know—you might be thankful for physiotherapy lessons in the future, too!

WHERE DO YOU COME INTO THE PICTURE AS AN ASSISTANT?

Even physiotherapists can’t be everywhere at once. They will oversee their patients’ exercise regimens and lead sessions when they can, but it will be up to you as a physiotherapy assistant to work one-on-one with patients.

You’ll learn quite a few handy things aside from anatomy and therapeutic techniques; you’ll learn how to collect data for your practice, group intervention techniques, and advanced interpersonal skills. You’ll even undergo proper keyboarding practices so that you can function more effectively in an office setting than most graduates coming out of traditional academic programs.

You’ll find jobs related to physiotherapy and occupational therapy in hospitals, private clinics, rehabilitation centres, and sports clinics, and community healthcare communities. You can even reach certification for Personal Training, which has really taken off in the last decade. And really, you can’t go wrong with over 500 hours of real-world work experience!
