CAN YOU GUESS CANADA’S MOST INNOVATIVE GROWTH INDUSTRY?
Canada is the world’s largest per-capita producer of video games, with the industry contributing $2.3 billion to Canada’s gross domestic product each year. One of the most gratifying things in life is being able to make a living doing the thing you love. If that is video games, this is the perfect time to join one of Canada’s most exciting and innovative industries.
The best games are often quite complex in design and require considerable planning and teamwork. Some spend years in development and can cost as much as $250 million, which is more than many blockbuster movies. Those looking to enter this challenging and creatively rewarding field will get off to a great start by enrolling in triOS College’s Video Game Design Technologies program, which offers both thorough classroom instruction and real world internship experience.
GET READY TO JOIN AN EXCITING TEAM OF DESIGNERS
Over the course of 74 weeks, students receive instruction in such important areas as graphic design, animation, level design, scripting, and sound design. In order to ensure a wide range of skills, participants work together with their fellow students alternating between various roles. This team approach to creating games and interactive media helps mirror the actual work environment. Portfolios are an important way to demonstrate your abilities to employers in this industry and triOS students participate in eight gaming portfolio projects as part of the course.
Students need the right hardware and software to learn. As program participants, they receive a custom Alienware laptop and design tablet, Adobe Creative Suite Software, a lifelong portfolio website, an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription for up to two years, and free Microsoft Office Professional Plus and DreamSpark Premium.
PREPARE FOR THE WORKFORCE
One of the best ways to be ready for a job is to have previous experience in the environment where you will work. Following the classroom instruction, students gain real-world work exposure by participating in a 16-week internship. Working alongside industry veterans is an invaluable way to learn about the responsibilities of an employee and the culture of a company.
Internships are a great way for companies to scout new employees and they provide many opportunities for ability enhancement and networking. This is a golden opportunity to demonstrate your work ethic and ability to function as part of a creative team.
triOS also offers students the option of only taking the 74-week diploma program without the internship, but that practical work experience goes a very long way in making you stand out from the pack when applying for positions.
