Scholarship Winners Announced for Lilian To Scholarship for Immigrants
Mississauga, ON (September 30, 2010) – In an effort to make the transition into the Canadian workforce easier, triOS College and The Canadian Immigrant Magazine offered up $25,000 worth of scholarships to 5 recipients in honour of the late immigrant activist Lilian To. Applicants had to submit an essay about their new life in Canada, their career goals, as well as their financial need. Congratulations to Prospero Requina, Soniya Thapa Neupane, Adela Silva, Emmanuel Manahan, and Herbert Langiden on being selected as winners of the Lilian To Scholarship!
These five winners come from very different places, and have unique stories that made them ideal candidates for the scholarship. For example, Soniya Thapa Neupane is a scholarship winner originally from Nepal, and has had many years of experience with humanities and Social Services. Soniya was accepted for the scholarship because of her desire to engage in Community Services work in Canada. Her experience includes advocating and serving the rural communities of Nepal in the field of water and sanitation, raising awareness, and promoting health education in the downtrodden and backward communities. She also sat as a board member for a non-government organization named Education and Empowerment for Sustainable Development-Nepal (EESD-Nepal). Soniya was an ideal candidate for the Lilian To Scholarship for Immigrants and triOS is pleased assist her in her Canadian studies.
Another scholarship winner is Adela Silva who is now enrolled in the Accounting & Payroll Administrator program. Adela had this to say about what the scholarship means to her. “Being chosen as one of the winners of the Lilian To Scholarship means that I can get the education and training that I need to fit into the Canadian workforce. It is truly incredible and I couldn’t have asked for more.” Then there is Herbert Langiden who is thrilled about receiving the scholarship. Herbert has only been in Canada for a few months and is already well on his way to securing a career in his new country. "I am absolutely honoured to be chosen as one of the recipients of the scholarship! Before I came here to Canada, I worked with the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP), an association of municipalities in the Philippines for eight years. I was the Officer in Charge of the Research and Information Management office of the LMP National Secretariat. One of the significant projects I got involved in was the e-Governance for Municipal Development (eGov4MD) Program. Currently, I am enrolled in the Network Specialist program at triOS College, Toronto Campus and will be completing by February 2011."
Another scholarship winner is Emmanuel Manahan who will be attending triOS for the Honours Business Administration Diploma program (HR & Applications Specialist). Emmanuel has had significant experience in two fields of specialization; human resources; which he had handled for the last 15 years in the Philippines, and company management. The transition into the Canadian lifestyle was not as smooth as he thought it would be. Emmanuel knew that furthering his studies in Canada would allow him to become more competitive in the labour market. The Lilian To Scholarship will now give Emmanuel that opportunity.
Prospero Requina was chosen as the final winner because of his outstanding attitude towards the scholarship. Within his application essay, he talked about his attitude and outlook towards the scholarship. He considers the scholarship as an investment and an opportunity to pay it forward. Prospero also discussed that the Addiction Workers program, which he is now enrolled in, is a career of intrinsic service that will assist the community and change lives. He feels that the scholarship is the best opportunity to make his dreams come true in this new country. The Lilian To Scholarship is an amazing stepping stone for these individuals and triOS can’t wait to see them succeed in their chosen career paths.
