Career Planning & Preparation - Level 1
This module introduces tools for planning and preparing for a successful job search, so that students can maintain a career-focused approach throughout their education program. Students will learn how to research opportunities and network for industry contacts, and use appropriate etiquette when communicating with prospective employers. Students will identify their personal skills, values and preferences for the workplace, begin preparation of a professional resume, cover letter, thank you note and references. Class discussions on various self-management topics introduced in Student Success Strategies will round out this module, which is a pre-requisite for Career Planning and Preparation – Level 2.
Career Planning & Preparation for Managers
This course addresses job-seeking strategies at the management level. Students will learn how to conduct an effective job search and identify various methods of applying for work with today's technology. Students will create a personal list of "Top Employers" and target current industry opportunities, while finalizing their professional résumé, portfolio, and career correspondence. Students will learn to identify the different types and forms of interviews, practice responding to typical questions, and practice follow-up, evaluation, and negotiation techniques they can use to ensure success.
Distribution Center Management
Distribution Center Management is designed to provide students with the knowledge of warehousing and distribution, plus deliver the skills required by an aspiring Warehouse/Distribution Manager to operate effectively. The course covers all of the key areas of distribution operations and the key activities involved in each area, with a focus on managing warehouse receiving and storage activities, managing warehouse order, dispatch and distribution operations, and the provision and care of warehouse resources. This course provides the knowledge required to minimize company expenses while maximizing profits and productivity, including effective skills for managing warehouse staff.
Diversity in the Workplace
This course introduces students to diversity and its strengths in the workplace. Among the topics covered are the strengths of diversity, its occasional challenges, how to manage diversity in the workplace, and the value of diversity training. Diversity in group dynamics is also addressed, with an emphasis on the strengths of a heterogeneous group and the types of diversity found in it.
Finance, Value Chain & Network Analysis
This course presents a systematic approach to incorporating finance in value chain analysis (VCA). As the lifeblood in the value chain, finance is often one of the critical constraints to economic growth. Understanding the financial structures both within and between firms in the value chain is necessary for the development of upgrading strategies that effectively increase competitiveness. A look at Porter’s Value Chain Framework and case study reviews of specific organizations will be highlighted.
Essentials of Freight Forwarding
This course builds on the knowledge acquired in the International Transportation and Trade course. A combined theory and hands-on environment will introduce students to the requirements for various international payments, export packaging and warehousing, commercial documentation, transportation insurance, cargo security and dangerous goods, as well as alternative methods of transportation. They will also learn about cost and quoting.
This course provides students with the knowledge on how to compete in a globalized, international economy and the understanding of how global logistics affects business. It includes the entire series of diverse operations involved in getting your product and service to your end consumer. Leading-edge logistics management as well as the principles and techniques required to achieve optimum operational efficiencies will be reviewed. Global logistics requires the development of international logistics solutions that are much more complex than what you would encounter while working on a national or even on a regional basis. Topics include logistical economic importance, connection to the supply chain, development of effective worldwide logistics strategies, and significance in transportation operations, sustainable logistics practices, cost management, logistics technology and global logistics decision-making.
Inventory Control & Materials Management
This course provides students with a broad introduction to the basics of materials management, manufacturing planning and control systems, inventory control, physical distribution and relationships with other operational functions within the supply chain.
Customs Issues & Procedures
This course will provide all students with a detailed overview of how the importation and exportation of goods are administered in Canada. Basic practices for successfully understanding of key legislation and regulatory compliance, plus preparing various trade documentation, will be of key focus.
Students will be introduced to the various careers in the customs field and the importance and benefits of the Canadian Society of Customs Brokers (CSCB).
Negotiations & Supplier Management
This course will provide all students with a broad introduction as to how a supply chain professional uses negotiation and contracting practices to create new value that enhances the company’s competitiveness. The combined theory and practical lab environment will introduce students to managing contracts in a global environment, discussion of the roles and responsibilities of purchasing managers, reviewing the features of the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), and how consumer protection legislation may impact both businesses and the consumer.
Introduction to Operations Management
This course will provide all students with a broad introduction to the field of operations in a realistic, practical manner. Operations Management (OM) includes a blend of topics from accounting, industrial engineering, management, and statistics. The combined theory and practical lab environment will introduce students to how OM relates to the efficient production of goods and services.
Applied Financial Analysis for Managers
This course provides knowledge and skills which are highly valued by employers in an increasingly competitive marketplace. This course prepares students for employment as a manager within a financial institution, or for a position in the finance department of a company. The objective is to demonstrate how financial information is used in forecasting, budgeting, and measuring the various financial operations of a business enterprise. Investment portfolios, financial statements, and in-depth case studies of actual corporate financials and collaborative assignments help students from different business disciplines to apply financial and wealth management techniques and strategies, including financial analysis, revenue recognition, and risk analysis, in both personal and corporate situations.
Business Project Management
In this course, students will develop skills required to successfully complete and manage projects, large and small, on-time and on-budget. Students will learn to define scope, analyze tasks and risks, build teams and develop a project plan based upon the phases and knowledge areas according to standard project management principles. There will be a focus on the technical skills for planning, executing, managing and controlling project as well as understanding the importance of interpersonal skills in organizational management for creating long-term success in a business (project) environment. Students will be introduced to Microsoft Projects as an effective software tool for practical project management and tracking project progression using timelines and Gantt charts for presentation of data. In addition, Students will learn to use web-based project management tools, such as Trello, Bootcamp as alternative software applications to MS Projects.
Leadership & Management Communications
This unit provides an overview of the essential leadership and communication strategies required to be an effective manager in the workplace. A better understanding of employee communication and motivation will help you to improve your personal and organizational performance while optimizing output and employee results. This unit demonstrates how effective leadership and management practices can increase job satisfaction, boost employee morale, and lead to high performing teams. This unit focuses on communication in order to reduce barriers in communication and ensure common understanding, while showing the important role of the manager in communicating change. Additionally, this unit explores ways to identify and cope with difficult behaviours encountered in the workplace. This includes learning to recognize personality styles, read body language, and use techniques to establish rapport and deal more effectively with others at the individual and team level.
Advanced Data Analysis with Access and Excel
This course will provide students with skills and understanding pertaining to Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel that are required for one to thrive in a managerial position. Using Access, students will develop an expertise on the design and creation of databases; work with tables, fields, and records; sort and filter data; and create queries, forms, and reports. In the second half of the course, students will build on their knowledge of Excel with advanced formulas and functions; the sharing, preparing, and analyzing of data; template and worksheet management; securing and sharing tools; and pivot tables, analysis tools, and basic macros. Students who complete this course will be able to perform managerial duties using both of these programs, while obtaining knowledge of data analysis to take upper-level applied statistics courses.
Financial Skills for Managers
This course is designed as an introduction to finance, and is intended for non-financial managers or other business professionals. It presents accounting concepts, tools, and methods in concise and understandable terms. Students will develop crucial skills for reading financial statements, analyzing financial reports, developing and modifying revenue and expense forecasts, identifying and monitoring critical measures of business performance, and budgeting effectively. The unit focuses on the importance of making calculated business decisions and examines different ways to do so effectively. While prior experience in accounting, finance, or budgeting is an asset, it is not a requirement. It is recommended, however, that students possess some working familiarity with Excel.
Human Resources Management
In this course, students explore the theory and practice of managing human resources as you learn about the fundamental functions and competencies needed by HR practitioners and supervisors today. Discover the employee life cycle, from job design, recruitment, and orientation to training and career development, discipline, and performance management.

Sales & Marketing for Managers
This unit provides students with a strong foundation to gain entry to a variety of marketing career paths. It delivers an introductory survey to customer analysis, segmentation and targeting; integrated marketing communications; pricing and distribution strategies; and product and service development and management. Hands-on activities include market research studies, advertising campaigns, and closing sales. This unit also explores ways to identify customers’ needs and motivations and how to increase sales by establishing and continuously improving relationships with customers.
Fundamentals of Management Strategy
This course explores the four general functions of management planning and strategy: planning, organizing, leading, and control. Using these elements together, students will become a more efficient, effective, and successful manager. The aim is to attain organizational goals through the most productive use of a company's most valuable resource, the staff, at all levels of the organization: staffing services as a fifth element to management function and planning.
Building on the Professional Purchasing course, students will receive in-depth instruction on the responsibilities and challenges that a purchasing manager faces. Topics include: managing the purchasing process to contribute to production efficiency; forecasting; procurement strategies, and related administrative tasks. We will discuss working and negotiating with internal and external partners at the local and international level to strategically select the appropriate suppliers. While doing so, we analyze how to minimize and optimize the Total Cost of Ownership. The module will also cover the importance of ethics—a commitment to social responsibility is a key ingredient in building sustainable purchasing relationships.
Participants will develop the skills they need to successfully manage purchasing in a variety of industries and environments. The course’s content breaks down the organization of purchasing and its structure, highlighting the importance of continuous improvement, efficiency and effectiveness, and quality to offer the best performance needs in line with a company’s mission and strategic objectives. The design of this module provides participants with assignments that mimic real-life purchasing scenarios to help prepare them for the working world, and to make a more significant contribution to sustainable growth at their companies.
This course will reinforce some of the principles of the purchasing process recently learned in the Introduction to Purchasing module. Students will develop an in-depth understanding of supply management and commodity strategy, supplier qualification, selection and management, and strategic cost management. Students will also learn why performance metrics are critical to purchasing performance, in addition to recognizing the future direction of purchasing and supply management.
Supply Chain Management & Execution Mechanics
This course provides an in-depth exploration of one of the major tools used when executing the production plans, with a focus on the Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) system. MRP is part of the manufacturing planning and control (MPC) system of companies and provides a detailed plan for the acquisition of necessary components to construct finished products that meet the customers’ demand.
MRP factors demand into its calculations, while also considering the Master Production Schedule (MPS), the Inventory levels, the lead time, and the Bill of Materials (BOM) as major inputs. Together, all of these elements create an environment for realistic and timely release of orders of components and materials.
The course will provide students with the necessary techniques for developing the MRP system as a dependent system, defining the due dates and quantities for materials and components, and finally outlining the release and receiving dates for orders in compliance with the customers’ specifications.
This course also offers insights into some of the major aspects of the supply chain. This includes how Manufacturing Resource Planning systems (MRP II) checks resources. It also examines the evolvement of MRP systems into sections of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, integrating these activities with other internal departments as well as suppliers and customers. This ultimately allows companies to run supply chains effectively and efficiently to maximize business success.
Supply Chain Management Work Placement
At the completion of the in-class section of this program, students are required to complete 12 weeks of an Internship at a business or organization within the Supply Chain and Logistics industry.
Supply Chain Optimization
This course provides an introduction to the value of using Lean principles in the supply chain. This interactive course uses discussion, examples, presentations, and interactive elements to get across the key aspects of how to utilize Lean in a modern supply chain context.
This module also provides an overview of the essential steps to Continuous Improvement (CI), as well as the relationship of CI to concepts such as Lean, Six Sigma, Quality Control, and Total Quality Management. The module will demonstrate how to identify critical CI opportunities, as well as setting targets and objectives to drive and measure business improvements.
Finally, the module will provide an understanding of appropriate improvement tools and demonstrate how these can be used in a systematic way to identify improvement opportunities.
Specialized Freight Services
This course is part of a professional standards association program (Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association). This course provides students with an advanced look at International Freight Forwarding.
Specialized Freight Services explores the details of marine cargo, project cargoes and chartering vessels or aircraft. Regulatory compliance is emphasized in an in-depth discussion of Customs while transportation law and legal liability are addressed through International Conventions and CIFFA’s Standard Trading Conditions All workbook exercises and exams are online.
Student Success Strategies
This course stresses the importance of developing non-technical skills to enhance personal, academic and career success. This includes understanding learning styles and honing practical study skills, such as memory, reading, note- and test-taking techniques. Personal exercises will focus on teamwork, decision making and problem solving skills, setting goals and maintaining a positive attitude techniques for managing change, stress and conflict will also be explored.
Transportation Operations Management
This unit is developed in accordance with the principles of Transport Canada. It is aimed at industry individuals looking to enter a profession relating to goods transportation options via various modes, with a focus on land transportation. Safety and security measures across different modes are also discussed. This unit highlights how a network of transportation options connect cities from a macro level, including a system of highways, rail corridors, ports, airports, and pipelines. It also covers other sustainable transportation by promoting choices that are healthy, integrated, convenient, economically beneficial, and environmentally sound.
International Transportation and Trade
This course is one of two that are part of a professional standards association program (Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association) which provides students with a broad introduction to the basics and principles of freight forwarding. A combined theory and hands-on environment allows students to gain a deeper understanding of the role of the freight forwarder, transportation geography, various modes of transportation, and how terms of trade are used between buyer and seller in a contract of sale of goods.
