PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Because success in today’s healthcare world depends on having well trained employees who can multi-task to meet a variety of challenges, the triOS Personal Support Worker program has been designed to provide students with all of the administrative and clinical knowledge and skills required for employment as a Personal Support Worker. The Personal Support Worker program enables you to develop skills required to provide personal support services to patients and their families, clients, and residents in the community, at home, in hospitals and in long-term care facilities. Services provided by the PSW include assistance in routine daily living activities; mobility; personal care and hygiene; ongoing medical conditions; and management of household activities.
Students receive:

  •  Classrooms that stimulate real-world healthcare settings, including hospital beds, wheel chairs and other required equipment
  •  Clinical work placement in a community and long-term care facility

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Excellent job opportunities are expected for this occupation, as rapid employment growth and high replacement needs produce a large number of job openings. Economic growth and replacement needs are expected to create a number of job openings through the year. The number of elderly people, an age group characterized by mounting health problems and requiring some assistance, is projected to rise substantially. In addition to the elderly, patients in other age groups will increasingly rely on home care, a trend that reflects several developments, including efforts to contain costs by moving patients out of hospitals and nursing care facilities as quickly as possible, the realization that treatment can be more effective in familiar rather than clinical surroundings, and the development and improvement of medical technologies for in home treatment. Personal Support Workers usually work for private and not-for profit homecare agencies. Some are self-employed. Personal support workers may also work for senior citizens’ homes, nursing homes or hospitals. They also provide care in the client’s home. Note: Some career and education options may require advanced degrees, further training or experience.

CERTIFICATIONS

The Personal Support Worker Certificate Program is an intensive comprehensive 31-week program recognized by the National Association of Career Colleges. The triOS Program combines instructor-led training with a clinical work placement designed to prepare students for a career in healthcare.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Mature Student Status (18 years of age and academic achievement assessment passed); able to pass a clear police check including a clear Vulnerable Sector check; a clear medical certificate indicating current immunization and free from communicable diseases; demonstrated fluency in English (oral and written); completion of a PSW Student Questionnaire and an admissions interview to determine suitability for a career as a Personal Support Worker.
