TORONTO – On November 23rd, 2023, the Government of Ontario announced new incentives to help attract Personal Support Worker students and to support recent graduates to meet the needs of the province. Through investing more than $300 million over the next three years, the Government aims to connect residents of long-term care homes to expanded home care services and more hours of direct care. The Province’s investment and subsequent incentives of up to $25,400 are available to both students and recent graduates of Personal Support Worker programs.

Students enrolled in a Personal Support Worker education program will now be eligible for a stipend of up to $5,400 from their employer while they complete their clinical placement in a long-term care home or in community care. Both current students and recent graduates who commit to working in a long-term care home or with a community care service provider for 12 months will receive $10,000. In addition, the Government is also providing $10,000 to assist with relocation costs for graduates who commit to working in a long-term care home or community care service provider in a remote, rural, or northern community for 12 months.

“This investment by the Government of Ontario will allow people in Ontario to connect with the critical care needs that Personal Support Workers provide”, said triOS President Stuart Bentley. “In addition to supporting recent Personal Support Worker graduates, this incentive also makes the cost of education more affordable as we aim to address the shortage of Personal Support Workers in Ontario”.

Along with making a significant investment in healthcare in Ontario, the Government has also made these incentives retroactive to April 1st, 2023 so that students who recently completed their clinical placements and Personal Support Workers who began working in long-term care or community care will also be able to benefit.
