Business CommunicationThis course is designed to give students a basic understanding of communication skills in the business environments. Focus will be placed on both written and spoken communications. Students will review the basic writing process with emphasis on the mechanics of writing. They will also learn the importance of effective spoken communication, deliver an oral presentation, and participate in a mock meeting.
Microsoft OutlookThis Microsoft Outlook course is created for students to build and validate the skills businesses need to succeed in today's information economy. It also provides students with the skills and knowledge they need to use to effectively manage e-mails, contacts, calendars, and tasks. Outlook has become the corporate standard electronic personal organizer. These are the foundational skills needed to communicate using Outlook in a variety of positions within and organization. This course is computer intensive and demands basic computer proficiency and a basic understanding of e-mail software. Students are expected to make arrangements to meet proficiency needs.
Microsoft PowerPointThis course is designed for students who are interested in learning the fundamentals needed to create and modify basic presentations by using Microsoft PowerPoint. Students will explore the PowerPoint environment and create a presentation, will format text on slides to enhance clarity, enhance the visual appeal, add graphical objects to a presentation and modify them, and finalize a presentation to deliver it.
Client RelationsIn this course, students learn the fundamentals of how a strong relationship with clients is developed and maintained. Professionalism, the importance of living up to obligations, and the various forms of prompt and attentive communication are discussed.
Career Planning & Preparation - Level 1This module introduces tools for planning and preparing for a successful job search, so that students can maintain a career-focused approach throughout their education program. Students will learn how to research opportunities and network for industry contacts, and use appropriate etiquette when communicating with prospective employers. Students will identify their personal skills, values and preferences for the workplace, begin preparation of a professional resume, cover letter, thank you note and references. Class discussions on various self-management topics introduced in Student Success Strategies will round out this module, which is a pre-requisite for Career Planning and Preparation – Level 2.
Career Planning & Preparation - Level 2This module continues to build on the concepts and skills introduced in Career Planning and Preparation - Level I. Students will learn how to conduct an effective job search and identify various methods of applying for work with today’s technology. Students will create a personal list of “Top Employers” and target current industry opportunities, while finalizing their professional resume, portfolio and career correspondence. Students will learn to identify the different types and forms of interviews, practice responding to typical questions, and practice follow-up, evaluation and negotiation techniques they can use to ensure success. Self-management topics from Career Planning and Preparation - Level I will be reviewed, with a focus towards on-the-job success in both learner placements and post-graduate employment.
Critical Thinking, Problem Solving & Decision MakingIn this course, students learn the elements of critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. These are all essential steps in formulating solutions that are logical, well thought-out and efficient. Students' evaluation, analysis, and interpretation skills will be challenged and honed. Also addressed is the value of understanding opposing viewpoints to help ensure best practices in future endeavors. The course will cover how critical thinking, problem solving and decision making differ and intersect.
Diversity in the WorkplaceThis course introduces students to diversity and its strengths in the workplace. Among the topics covered are the strengths of diversity, its occasional challenges, how to manage diversity in the workplace, and the value of diversity training. Diversity in group dynamics is also addressed, with an emphasis on the strengths of a heterogeneous group and the types of diversity found in it.
Microsoft ExcelThe main objective of this course is to introduce you to the basic commands, functions and capabilities of Microsoft Office Excel. It is designed for computer users who are new to spreadsheets, or who only plan to use Excel
occasionally. This course will provide you with the skills to create Workbooks using: "what if"
analysis; utilize multiple sheets and learn the basic concepts of Formulas and Functions.
Group DynamicsThe course explores human dynamics and its importance in both groups and the workplace. Students will learn the importance of groups and group work on decision making and productivity, as well as the different qualities found in leaders and the various leadership principles. Also covered is controversy, how it effects groups, when it can be a positive thing, and how negative controversy can be diffused.
Concepts and Characteristics of InsuranceThis course introduces students to the basics of General Insurance, risk and risk management options, plus the functions, types and internal organization of insurance companies. Students will also learn the characteristics of insurance and other contracts, including the five essential elements required of all contracts, the effects when one or more elements of the contract is missing and when and insurance contract is satisfied or discharges. This course also defines key insurance terms and concepts, as well as other insurance terms.
Insurance Industry Professional EthicsInsurance brokers are faced with a variety of ethical decisions every day, in their dealings with clients, insurance companies and other brokerage staff. This course focuses on a number of situations brokers and/or brokerages may have faced or face at one time or another in the conduct of the business of insurance. Your job is to determine whether the behavior being demonstrated or the decision being made is ethically acceptable for each situation. You will be provided with professional ethical scenarios that call for you to make a decision on how you would have acted in that situation. Your answer will then be evaluated as to whether that behaviour was ethical or not.
General Insurance Standard CoveragesIn this course, students will be introduced to the principles and characteristics of various types of insurance and the laws that govern them. Topics covered include: personal automobile coverage, homeowners insurance, commercial insurance, liability insurance and travel medical insurance.
Ontario Specific Coverage and FormsStudents will learn how approaches to insurance differs from province to province, and will learn about Ontario-specific coverage in detail .This course leads you through the June 1st, 2016, Ontario Auto forms plus covers the OAP 1 - Ontario Automobile Policy, OAP 2 - Ontario Drivers Policy, OAP 4 - Garage Policy, and a summary of the most common OPCFs - Change Forms. The Comprehensive Homeowner, Tenant, Condominium Unit Owner Policy Wordings will also be studied.
Automobile Insurance - Broker Practical AssessmentsThis course will provide students with hands-on, practical experience with automobile insurance. The course will be based on case studies and scenarios, and students will be required to role-play the CSR role with a focus on automobile quotes, service requirements, etc. They will become comfortable using Compu-Quote and understand the importance of each section that needs to be completed with in that program to generate a truly accurate quote. They will practice explaining to clients what coverage they will require and why.
Property Insurance - Broker Practical AssessmentsThis course will provide students with hands-on, practical experience with property insurance. The course will be based on case studies and scenarios, and students will be required to role-play the CSR role with a focus on property quotes, service requirements, etc. The students will be given hands on training with tools such as ezITV and iClarify and learn how to explain to clients the difference between appraised value and rebuilding cost as it relates to insurance. They will also learn the importance of a broker when it relates to explaining what coverage is required for either tenants, condo or home packages.
Insurance Regulations and Claims AdjustingInsurance is one of the most highly regulated industries in Canada. In this course you will learn about the government regulations of insurance companies and brokers as well as the different insurance industry organizations.
Ontario Regulatory Responsibilities and the RIBO ActIn this course, students explore the laws related to insurance and the basic terminology associated with insurance. It examines the relationship between risk and insurance; the legal context of insurance and how it works within the judicial system, and examines the various jobs within the insurance industry and their relationship to each other. The course also covers the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario Act, the Code of Conduct and Regulatory Conditions.
RIBO Exam Prep 1This course will review all topics introduced in the Introduction to Insurance block. It will reinforce key concepts and prepare students to write the RIBO level 1 final licensing exam.
RIBO Exam Prep 2This course will prepare students to write the RIBO level 2 final licensing exam. It will build on the topics introduced in the Introduction to Insurance block, and simulate the RIBO final exam format. They will review the Auto and Property wordings as well as practice how to quickly search those wordings if they require it during the exam.
Broker Skills DevelopmentThis course will teach students the specific knowledge, skills and abilities required to practice effectively as an insurance broker. This continued study of insurance broker skills in time management, sales and customer service, allows you to expand your knowledge, and ultimately serve your customers better. You will also learn the techniques for identifying common signs of fraud, behavious associated with fraud, and situations where insurance fraud commonly occurs.
Interpersonal CommunicationEffective interpersonal communication is vital for the success of any organization. It impacts working relationships, productivity, and a variety of other business activities. This course introduces the concepts of effective interpersonal communication in the workplace, considering internal and external professional relationships. Additionally, students will learn about telephone etiquette, which will prepare them to answer calls with confidence and professionalism, respond to customer/client inquiries effectively, and handle customer/client complaints. Student Success StrategiesThis course stresses the importance of developing non-technical skills to enhance personal, academic and career success. This includes understanding learning styles and honing practical study skills, such as memory, reading, note- and test-taking techniques. Personal exercises will focus on teamwork, decision making and problem solving skills, setting goals and maintaining a positive attitude techniques for managing change, stress and conflict will also be explored.

The course combines lecture/demonstration by an instructor with readings, trainings, projects, and a final exam for students to work on in a simulation-based environment. Students are expected to ensure they meet proficiency requirements for working in this environment.
